Meet Mallam T Bass, winner of Journey of a Thousand Miles Compo

Mallam T Bass, the talented producer/singer/bass player has emerged winner of the Journey of a Thousand Miles competitionwith his very distinctive rendering of D’Prince’s pulsating track. We caught up with the young musical dynamo shortly after he claimed his N1 Million cash prize. Mallam T Bass told Mavin what he planned to do with the money and his plans for the future.

Tell us a bit more about yourself.

My real names are Lisa Ezekiel Temitope but I am popularly known as Mallam T Bass. I’m from Ondo state but I stay in Lagos. I’m a first child from a family of three. I’m a 400level accounting student at the Lagos State University Anthony Campus. I’m a Christian.

Congratulations on winning the N1 Million prize money. How are you going to spend it?

The only thing that is certain about spending the money now is my 10% tithe of the money. After that I’ll just leave the remaining in my account till I come up with a constructive and productive idea.

Your rendition of Journey of a Thousand Miles was certainly unique, how did you go about putting it together?

Well its wasn’t really tasking coming up with the idea because the song itself (The Journey Of A Thousand Miles) is a master piece. I play the bass guitar quite well, and immediately I heard about the competition I thought of doing something really different. So I changed the progression and sang with the bass guitar which is very uncommon. The fact is that I was aware that there are lots of talented singers around so I just had to think outside the box. Thank God it worked

Were you already familiar with the song and the Frenzy album? Did it make it easier to record?

Yeah it did. I listen to the Frenzy album almost daily because besides singing and playing the bass guitar, I produce too. I try to learn and improve my production skills so I get any album produced by Don Jazzy , score and get familiar with his tone selections ,melody, harmony, mix and master. It really made it easy for me


How would you describe your musical style?

My style is what I call “Let’s Go” meaning any kinda genre I find myself – let’s go. I can decide to do RnB , Hiphop ,Afro e.t.c  Music is an art so I explore every genre not limited to a particular one.

Who are your musical influences both locally and internationally?

Don Jazzy , Richard Bona , Victor Wooten , Wande Coal , T-pain , 2face , George Benson to mention but a few.

You have now had a chance to meet Don Jazzy and some of the Mavins. How was the experience? 
Awesome. In fact I can’t express the way I feel in words. The gift of a man truly would make him sit with kings. It can only be God

I seriously trust in God to help me manage and effectively use the platform I have. I trust he will lead me to do the right things at the right time.
