POPE JOINS TWITTER

Pope Benedict XVI has joined Twitter under the username @Pontifex and will tweet in eight languages beginning December 12. Within two hours of the announcement being made, the pontiff had garnered some 60,000 followers rising to around 300, 000 as at the time of this report.
The timing couldn’t be better as Christmas is just around the corner. The Vatican said on Monday that “The first tweets will be answers to questions sent to the pope on matters of faith. The public can start sending them starting now using (hash, # askpontifex). The pope’s presence on Twitter is a concrete expression of his conviction that the Church must be present in the digital arena,”
The tweets will be in Arabic, English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese and Spanish and more languages could be added in future. Pontifex means Pope in Latin.
