The Headies, aka Hip Hop World Awards
are here again. Arguably Nigeria’s biggest music awards, The Headies
has indeed come a long way, from the small gathering of entertainers
which began in March 2006, to a international platform for the reward of
achievements and recognition of talent in the Nigerian music industry.
This edition will be hosted by singer Omawumi and rapper M.I, and will hold at the Expo Hall at the Eko Hotel and Suites
this Saturday. As we gear up for the sixth edition of the prestigious
Headies Awards ceremony, let’s take a quick look at what to expect this
year. Who will win big? What major performances should we be looking
forward to? And finally, who takes the NEXT RATED prize? Your guess is
as good as ours. But let us take a peek into the nominees list and see
if we can predict a few winners of the coveted Headie statuette.
Nominees
Top on the list of the nominees are Psquare and Bez with six nominations each, closely followed by Wizkid, Davido and Ice Prince
who have 4 nominations apiece. Psquare and Wande Coal are still the
biggest winners in the history of the Headies Awards (Single event) with
5 awards each. Psquare won 5 awards at the maiden edition of the
Headies in 2006, then known as the Hip Hop World Awards, while in 2010
,following the success of his debut album, Wande Coal collected all 5
awards. The overall most decorated artiste in the history of the Headies
award is rapper and Lyricist Mode 9, who has an impressive collection
of 9 awards in total. He won’t be adding to that collection this year,
as he wasn’t nominated, due to his failure to release a track during the
year in review.
Psquare is up for Album of the year,
Song of the year, Artiste of the year, Best pop single, Best Collabo and
Best R&B Album. The super duo look likely to sweep these
categories, but they have some big names like D’banj, Wizkid, and Davido
to contend with in categories like, Album of the year, Artiste of the
year and Song of the year. We see them walking away with at least 4
awards.
Bez is up for Recording of the year,
Best R n B Single, Best R&B/Pop Album, Best Collabo, Best Vocal
performance and Revelation of the year. Bez is also expected to do well,
but he will be facing stiff competition from artistes such as Wizkid,
Tiwa Savage and Psquare in categories such as Best R n B Single of the
year, Best R n B/Pop Album of the Year and Revelation of the Year. We
see Bez going home with at least 2 awards.
Others
Wizkid will be good competition in
categories such as, Album of the Year, Best R&B/Pop Album and
Revelation of the Year. Davido is looking good in categories such as,
Best Pop Single, Song of the year and Next Rated. For Ice Prince, we
think he’s got a good chance in the Best Rap Album and Revelation of the
Year Categories.
The Next Rated category happens to be
the biggest, and everyone is eager to see who gets the brand new ride
that comes with the award. Competing in this category are Davido, Flowssickk, Praiz, Eva Alordiah.
The major contender in this category will be Davido, who has everything
going for him due to the major success of his hit single ‘Dami duro’.
Performances
This Headies will, for the first time ever, witness the performance of Afrobeat King, Femi Kuti. The grand patron of the New Afrika Shrine will be live on stage, and will be inducted into the Headies Hall of Fame, joining Dayo D1 Adeneye, Kenny Ogungbe, Phillip Trimmel, Olisa Adibua, Obi Asika, Femi Akintunde Johnson, Sir Shina Peters and DJ Jimmy JATT. Other performances to look out for will be that of the Project fame star girl Chidinma, O.B.O (Omo Baba Olowo) Davido, Eva Alordiah and others. The winners of the Rookie Competition, Dammy Krane and Burna Boy
will also be performing. Burna Boy’s single ‘Like To Party’ is enjoying
massive airplay, while Dammy Krane’s ‘My Dear’ is still getting love
from fans.
It’s already here people; you too can make your predictions and watch out to see how the night turns out!
